Des nouvelles de Paula :
Hello.
It is almost the end of day three now. Paula is doing well. We have managed to pass the stage of tail between the legs and shaking like a leaf. In the garden she keeps looking over the fields, probably remembering where she came from. She listens to all the sounds and smells all the smells that the wind brings. The heatwave did not make things easier but we are today peeing without a worry and having a poop was a lot easier as well. She is still mesmerised by the commotions the other three create but she is getting used to it. She is a good observer. And she has me protecting her and she knows that. If unsure she will either look at me or come to me for confirmation that everything is fine. She is beautiful in every way. And she loves her food. Nova is jealous of her bowl and is desperate to eat from it. Paula is getting on well with Boy and Nova. Cotton has not had a chance yet to introduce himself properly. He is an old man and it takes a bit longer for him. All the cats have introduced themselves and surprisingly none of them have whacked her on her head yet as they would normally do. Just in case. So a big happy family.
There is one thing I have been thinking about those long half an hours or hours I have been spending in the garden with her depending on the heat. You keep talking about it as well,Verena. Not sure everyone really understands. It's TIME. Adopting an animal is lovely ,all these different emotions, maybe even cool to some. Some might wish that the day after adoption the dog will fit in and do everything they expect it to do. But in reality it is the other way around, we need to fit in with our animal,we need to provide the security, love, warmth, trust and TIME. It took me the whole of Monday to get Paula to do her first pee and poo. I am not going to lie, I was tired. But I had taken that time to do that. You can't rush a fearful animal. They need to stand, sit down, look and you need to be there when everything that is surrounding them becomes too much. But you need TIME. Just for them,no distractions. And we never seem to have it. When I adopted Boy , the amount of time it took me to get him to where he is now!!!! After three months I was exhausted but each time I looked at him I was so pleased that he had a home. Nothing else really mattered. The same with Cotton and Nova and Paula.
I am adding a little photo from her first evening on the sofa. She loves that red cushion now.
Just to say you are both doing such wonderful work. It is hard but I am sure also rewarding. Sometimes I read your posts and think how on earth can you emotionally manage with the knowledge how cruel humanity can be ( or is). I think you are wonderful!
With respect,
Ilo
